Utica is a large city located in central New York State. It sits in the Mohawk Valley, an area between the Adirondack Mountains and the Catskill Mountains. Utica is located in Oneida County and serves as the seat of government. In addition to being the county seat, Utica is the largest city in Oneida County. In 2016, there were approximately 60,652 people living in Utica according to the United States Census Bureau. In New York, Utica is the 18th largest city.

Settlers began arriving in the area of modern-day Utica in 1773. Individuals quickly established a village which served as an important stop for settlers moving farther west. In 1792, some of the land was sold to a group that included General Philip Schuyler and General John Bradstreet. The landowners surveyed the land and built an inn. Seeking a name, individuals put many names in a hat and drew a name. Utica was chosen. It is believed the name references an ancient city located in Roman North Africa.

Today, Utica is a large city with many attractions. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad, Stanley Theater, Utica Children’s Museum, and the Utica Farmer’s Market are found in Utica. Also located in the city are many districts. Downtown Utica is a growing hub of finance, hospitality, and government offices. Bagg’s Square is the oldest neighborhood in the city. The neighborhood is a mixed-use destination and features fine dining, coffee shops, taverns, and more. In Utica, there are endless entertainment and recreation opportunities.

Utica is located in a region of the United States that experiences very cool winters and warm summers. Daytime temperature highs during the months of December, January, and February range from the low to mid-30s. During the months of summer, temperatures range from the upper-70s to mid-80s. However, humidity levels are high during the summer months which create an uncomfortable environment. Cooling and heating systems are necessary for Utica residents.
