Much of James Fenimore Cooper’s writings are set in Cooperstown. The centerpiece of the village, Otsego Lake, was nicknamed Glimmerglass by author Cooper. In the middle 1800s, Cooperstown became popular as a summer retreat. During this period of time, many businesses and estates were constructed. The keystone of Cooperstown, the Otesaga Hotel, was built in 1909. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America. During the months of June, July, and August, daytime temperature highs vary from the mid to upper-70s. However, it is not uncommon for heat waves to pass through the city. When heat waves do pass through, the combination of high humidity levels and warm temperatures create an environment that is uncomfortable to most people.
